Chord & Melody at the Same Time - Part 1

JOHN MASSEY

Before the Carter Family most people either played chords, or melody on the guitar. Maybelle Carter invented a unique finger style approach to both accompaniment and solo (melody and chords together) which is often referred to as the gateway to fingerpicking. We will be using Maybelle’s technique to play several familiar songs (using both standard notation, and tablature – you choose).  To get the most out of this workshop one needs to know, and be able to use, basic major, minor, and seventh chords. One should also have had some experience playing simple melodies. LEVEL 2-4

Chord & Melody at the Same Time - Part 2

JOHN MASSEY

We will look at two ways to create a chord/melody solo where the melody is a higher pitch than the chord. In each case we will explore some useable strategies putting both melody and chord together (using both standard notation, and tablature – you choose) to play some well know songs. The first approach will use a strum, stroke, or finger style arpeggio to describe the chord while the second approach will use typical finger picking strategies.  To get the most out of this workshop one needs to know, and be able to use, basic major, minor, and seventh chords. One should also have had some experience playing simple melodies. - LEVEL 2-4
